Historical Dates of Interest

11 Sept 1887 St Mary's Church, Lismore, declared the Pro-Cathedral.
17 March 1892 Bishop Doyle announces plans to build a Cathedral dedicated to St Carthage. The design is entrusted to Messrs Wardell and Denning.
2 Oct 1892 Foundation stone of the Cathedral to be laid by Cardinal Moran, Archbishop of Sydney. Ceremony postponed until 4 October because of inclement weather.
April 1893 Construction deferred due to financial crisis in Australia.
Sept 1904 Excavations for the foundations commenced.
2 Jan 1905 Pro-Cathedral destroyed by fire.
May 1905 Cathedral foundations completed; Bishop Doyle laid the first brick of the walls.
24 June 1907 Bishop Doyle celebrates the first Mass in the unfinished sanctuary.
18 Aug 1907 Cardinal Moran returns to solemnly open and dedicate the Cathedral.
11 June 1911 The Cathedral tower is completed and blessed and the peal of twelve bells consecrated.
23 June 1912 The Cathedral organ by Dodd of Adelaide is blessed.
15 Aug 1919 The Cathedral and its altars are solemnly consecrated by the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop Cattaneo.

Pastoral letter on the Centenary of St Carthage's Cathedral - Catholic Life March 2007
