The Chrism Mass is celebrated once a year. This year the unique and solemn liturgy will be celebrated in St. Carthage’s Cathedral Lismore, on Monday March 21st at 7pm.
During the Mass, Bishop Jarrett will bless the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and the sacred oil of chrism.
The oil of catechumens is used in the ceremony of Baptism, the oil of the sick for the anointing of the sick, and the oil of chrism for baptism, confirmation, the ordination of priests and bishops and the consecration of altars.
The oil is olive oil with additives such as various spices, an aromatic perfume and balsam.
Since the bishop is the only minister in the diocese who may consecrate chrism, this Mass highlights his ministry and our union with him. In recent years this Mass has also highlighted the ministry of the priests of the diocese. Consequently at this Mass the priests present renew their commitment of service. The Chrism Mass is also an opportunity for the people of the diocese to gather around their bishop and priests as a sign of unity of faith and purpose in the Cathedral, the mother church of the diocese.
