The Road of Pilgrims – Catholic graces Pilgrimage group from the southern and central parts of the Diocese met on Friday, 22nd July to discuss their final preparations, receive their travel documents and be commissioned under the patronage of St Christopher, the patron Saint of Travellers.
All 46 pilgrims were presented with a medal of St Christopher during the Mass celebrated by Fr Peter Wood ( St Augustine’s Coffs harbour and assisted by Deacon James Foster ( St Mary’s McLean ) The music led by Jeff Kouwehoven from Coffs, was a fitting start to an evening of preparation for this 26 day pilgrimage to France, Lourdes, Avila, Fatima, Loyola, Santiago, Madrid, Rome and a host of exciting locations on the journey through France, Spain, Portugal and Italy.
Leaving on August 5th the pilgrims will experience many of our faith’s historic sites, celebrating mass at the heart of the Catholic faith.
Fr Peter Wood, Fr Michael Alcock are the pilgrimage chaplains and along with the management team will ensure a safe and ‘life changing’ experience for all pilgrims.
The pilgrims will first fly to Paris starting at 7am for a world wind tour of the city. An evening flight to Lourdes will then begin the journey of a life time for these young and mature pilgrims.
The highlight of the pilgrimage will be the 7 days in Madrid for WYD 2011 in the presence of His Holiness Pope Benedict and along with the catechesis and the Youth Festival, the opening and final mass celebrated by the Pope, the pilgrims will join an estimated 2 million from around the world to uniting as one in their faith.
The Lismore Diocese is truly blessed to have such a dynamic and vibrant group representing it at this wonderful experience.
The pilgrims will then fly to Rome for 4 days in the Holy City visiting the heart and foundation of our Catholic Faith.
Returning back to Australia on August 29th.
