Photo: Sr Di Moralde says ASPIRE is a wonderful opportunity for young adults to learn more about their spirituality
Since 2017, Bishop Greg Homeming has hosted ASPIRE: Young Adult Spiritual Formation, a monthly evening for young adults aged 18-35 across the Diocese of Lismore. These formation sessions, held in person and online, provide an opportunity for spiritual growth through the lens of Carmelite spirituality.
Each session includes input and reflection from Bishop Greg, followed by space for dialogue, questions, and shared discernment. What began as formation primarily for Youth Ministry Officers has grown into a wider opportunity for young adults across the Diocese, thanks in part to Sr Dedith (Di) Moralde. In 2020, Sr Di approached Bishop Greg with a request to open the sessions to others, recognising the need for meaningful formation opportunities for young adults in both St Carthage’s Parish and at Southern Cross University, where she serves as a Catholic Chaplain.
“ASPIRE is a wonderful opportunity to introduce young adults to the Carmelite saints and their spirituality,” Sr Di says. “Even for me, as a Carmelite Missionary, it has deepened my love for God and strengthened my vocation. The Carmelite saints have become my guide and inspiration, especially in times of difficulty and frustration. I pray that more young adults across our Diocese will seize this opportunity to deepen their relationship with God.”
For Felicity, a parishioner from Lismore and regular ASPIRE attendee, the experience has been both nourishing and transformative.
“I used to find St Teresa of Avila and St John of the Cross intimidating – too advanced and ‘holy’ for someone like me,” Felicity says. “Bishop Greg has helped us understand how to read their works and has made their wisdom accessible to all. Through ASPIRE, I’ve gained the tools to return to these texts over and over again to guide my prayer life. I hope one day I’ll meet these mystics in heaven!”
All young people aged 18-35 are warmly invited to attend ASPIRE, either in person at Doyle House, Lismore, or online via Zoom. Whether you’re new to spiritual growth or seeking to go deeper, ASPIRE offers a space for prayer, learning, and community. To find out more contact Sr Di Moralde: youth@lismore.catholic.org.au
